Tough Mudder VA 2011 (Part 3)

Back for more.

The longest, seemingly non-stop uphill march of the day. Felt like at LEAST 1 mile in length of just trudging through uphill fields of mud and grass and rocks. Hated this so much. After every turn we came to that looked like it could be the top and the ground would level off it just turned and we could see another path of more uphill grinding. Foot-by-foot we marched on. I'd be truly amazed if anybody actually ran this uphill event. After the Chernobyl this was the 2nd worst event in my opinion. I think this was way worse for me because I had hurt my hip/leg on the slide so by this time I was starting to hobble and having burning calves wasn't helping any much either. This obstacle is probably the one that caused me the most pain. Plus, there really is no good place to stop to just rest because if you do you're just standing there trying to balance yourself at an angle while on this hill. Just had to keep going on. I hate hills.

This course I honestly didn't mind because I didn't realize it was a course. I seriously thought we were still on the death march because this was also uphill, just a bit muddier. It all blended together for me as "uphill obstacle I hate".

Truly there was no better course for the name of this whole event than this one. Crawling through this mud actually wasn't bad. I think the wires were held up much hire than 8" off the ground as people were just crawling on hands and knees just fine without having to get their whole chest on the ground. I did, though. Same problem as with the tubes, my legs are just too long so my back kept hitting the wiring. Angled forward, got a little muddy and kept on trucking through. I think it would have been a bit better if it was muddier (more wet) and wires lower, forcing everyone on their belly for a real mud crawl. Still had that primal feeling to it we were all looking for in any case.

This one was too easy for me. The low logs you have to climb over I could almost step over and the high logs you go under I just glide under when I bend. I thought it was just real simple, no real challenge here. Shorter people got more out of it for the low logs because they at least had to throw their bodies over and climb them.

After thinking about it I'm realizing there WAS another course that I don't think was featured on the map or events description early on even before the log carry and it seemed to be some sort of climbing over wet hay stacks one.

Thinking about it again and there actually were TWO hack stack/barrel type courses not listed, aside from all these other ones. The second one was closer to the end and featured jumping up one barrel and then up onto another barrel then climing down the other side. Interesting ones, not overly difficult especially once you made it up the first barrel.

If I do remember correctly this one actually came right AFTER the Chernobyl ice bath event much earlier on than is listed on the map. Climbing up these ropes was actually pretty fun with all the other people next to you. After getting over the top I took a turn and replaced some guy who was keeping the nets stable enough for people to climb at the bottom. Holding down the ropes is really very helpful as they were just very loose without people there and it's always nice to help out all the others doing all this crazy stuff with you.

So after the hay barrels we came across the 2nd set of walls. Hated these just as much. Actually, no, even more because these were maybe a foot or so taller than the previous walls. Couldn't make it over without help again. Bah.

Ughhh. Get lightly sprayed by water and crawl through sand. Doesn't like a lot fun at all. This wasn't as horrible as it could have been, although it still had it's downsides. This was set up identical to the mud crawl under the wire except replace mud with sand. The thing about this sand was that it wasn't just pure dry sand; it was semi-wet and like a soft mud so it had a different texture to it then imagined so less sand stuck to you. Sand did still get stuck to you, though. Much like the previous mud crawl the wire was higher than expected so a lot of people didn't get it all on their stomachs (knees/hands/elbows were still very sandy).

One more part to finish this all off.
